The 5th Gago Conference on European Cancer Policy took place in Heidelberg, Germany, in October 2022. At the conference, European stakeholders in cancer research gathered to discuss the current landscape of cancer research and care policy in Europe. During the meeting, participants identified gaps in existing European programs focusing on cancer research, including Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan (EBCP), the Mission on Cancer (MoC), Understanding Cancer (UNCAN.eu), and the joint action CRANE and established the next priorities and outlined them in the Heidelberg Manifesto for cancer research. A report on the meeting’s discussions was published in May 2023 in Molecular Oncology. The report focuses on how to effectively develop infrastructures for translational, prevention, clinical, and outcomes-based cancer research, with an emphasis on effective implementation and sustainability. Patient and public engagement were also highlighted as critical factors for success.
